The history

of the foundation

The Baltershof Foundation is a public-law foundation vested with legal capacities and operating under civil law in Munich, Germany. The foundation was launched on the 26th of November 2007 by Henning Schulte-Noelle and his wife, Renate Schulte-Noelle, with an endowment of € 1.000.000. On the 28th of November 2077, the Baltershof Foundation received official and regulatory recognition from the government of Upper Bavaria, categorizing the foundation as a charitable organization authorized to accept donations in aid of the organization’s objectives and in accordance with by-laws. The foundation’s primary aim is to help children and young people in need, regardless of nationality, social status or religion. More specifically, the Baltershof Foundation promotes and fosters long-term education and improved living conditions for all children in need.

The means for achieving the foundation’s aim include, among others, the following objectives:

  • Providing direct financial support to children and/or families who require the help of others due to adverse physical, mental, emotional or financial conditions. Such support also includes the financing of relevant assistance projects that serve the foundation’s objectives.
  • Establishing and conducting the foundation’s own assistance projects for children and adolescents.
  • Conducting the foundation’s own projects in the field of child and youth education.
  • Providing education and support to relevant projects through training and educational facilities.

The Foundation’s directing board is made up of the following members:

Dr. Henning Schulte-Noelle (Chairperson), Renate Schulte-Noelle (Dep. Chairperson), Annette Beckmann (Management), Katharina Schulte-Noelle (Management), Thorsten Beckmann, Philipp Schulte-Noelle

The tasks

of the foundation

The Establishment and conduct of the Baltershof Foundation is defined, guided and prompted by the following values and beliefs:

„Children are the most precious thing we have. They are our future.“

Helping children by protecting and developing them, according to their abilities, is among the most pressing social issues of our time. Our perception and understanding of this issue must be met with a change of consciousness, particularly in wealthier parts of the world. Raising children should, once again, be regarded as a source of joy and fulfilment in human life and not simply as obstacles to individual self-realization or economic burdens. The plight of children is certainly most prevalent in many third-world countries, where they suffer from poverty, malnutrition, disease or high mortality rates. However, wealthy and more developed societies also often fail to provide children with good living and development conditions. The increasing disintegration of the family network as the core of every society affects the most innocent, resulting in economic hardship and neglect of children. Where the state is unable to alleviate these and similar problems, private initiatives are needed. The founders of Baltershof Foundation strive to help and enable children to lead worry-free and worthwhile lives. In their efforts, the organisation’s founders bear gratefully in mind the struggles of their own parents, particularly their mothers Elfriede Schulte-Noelle and Flora Schmidt, who secured success and prosperity for their children by providing them with a stable family–filled life during Germany’s post-war years. The Baltershof Foundation was also named in recognition of the Schulte-Noelle family farm in Westphalian, where the family spent many happy years together after 1945.
